1 Completely Free Stock Footage Clip Digs Deep

I've wanted to shoot this clip for a long time, but didn't really know a good way to capture it.  I tried mounting the FS700 directly onto my snow shovel, but I could not keep it fastened safely and scoop/throw at the same time.  Usually, I catch most of my clips unprepared, so my aspirations for getting this fell to the wayside early.  It just so happened that I was reading an article on macro photography when I realized that I didn't need MY snow shovel (you know, the one I ACTUALLY use to clear the snow), just A snow shovel.  I immediately thought of my kid's tiny red shovel that they would play with when I go out.  I was able to hold this shovel underneath and keep both it and the camera steady while I scooped and tossed.  Since I was using a wide and macro lens, I was able to fill the frame with what looks like a relatively normal sized shovel.  A happy byproduct is that the snowflakes look crisp and large this close to the camera.  I also was not counting on the force and energy that the snow displayed when it was tossed.  I love how the entire chunk is flung from the shovel before it breaks up.

I wanted this clip to be a companion piece to my lawnmower and leaf raking videos.  To finish out the series I need a springtime themed POV shot.  Feel free to offer your suggestions in the comment section below or on our Facebook page.

You are welcome to use this video in your projects you are working on, or keep it in your clip library for future work. The only thing you cannot do is turn around and offer it AS stock footage. Have fun with it!

1 Free Stock Footage Clip Is Ready to Pop

What you see here is a collection of 6 party poppers in super slow motion.  Right off the bat, I'll admit that this clip as not exactly as exciting and dynamic as I hoped it "COULD" be.  It is the extent of what I think I have legally do personally with "explosives" in the great state of New York.  While I am somewhat kidding, there really wasn't much more I could have added that would have been possible while doing something in a small studio setup in my home.  As this site and my capabilities grow, I hope to offer more than just a few novelty favors.

2 Free Stock Footage Clips Are Key

Since I've lived in my current place, I've had this old piano in the basement.  It was left there when the old homeowners moved out.  While it is need of some crucial TLC, I don't have it in my heart to get rid of it.  I've cleaned it up quite a bit, and what you even see here was after a considerable about of dusting (The hammers were gray when I started!).  I took the opportunity, while I had it opened up, to catch a couple of clips to offer here.

What you see is my FS700 with my Sigma 180mm macro lens lit with my F&V R-300 Ring light.  I would have liked to have a few more light sources so I could have closed my iris a bit and opened up the field of view a little more and still capture it at 240 frames per second.

I am happy with what I could get, I am glad I did it, and I am glad I learned what I need to do better.  Hope you can use it!!!

1 Free Stock Footage Clip is Electrifying

I have finally released a clip that I had been hoping to get since I started this blog.  Lightning.  Am I happy with it?  Kind of.

This was shot at 240 frames per second during a pretty intense lightning storm.  What was nice is that the high speed camera was able to catch bolts that were originally too quick to see with the naked eye.  At that frame rate and shutter speed though, I was getting some severe "partial flash sync".   I've done what I can to correct that issue, by partially removing frames and also stacking concurrent ones and using some creative blending techniques to rebuilt the actual lighting condition.  It was a labor of love.  Many times when I run into a technical issue like this, I take the time to learn from my mistakes correct the initial error in post, and create a game-plan on how to not let something like this happen again.   As of right now though, I'm honestly not sure what I would do differently if another storm were to present itself.  I was happy enough with the end result to release it, considering I do not have any lighting clips up yet.  Hopefully in the future I can get you something better.

1 Free Stock Footage Clip Skips a Bit

This was another clip I grabbed during my quiet morning on the shores of Lake Ontario.  Because of the same condition, this might match up well with my previous clip "1 Free Stock Footage Clip Shore is Pretty" which was shot on the same day at the same time.  I had the camera very low and wide for this shot.  I tried as hard as I could to place the initial skip very close to the lens (It couldn't have been more than 2 feet away).  That mixed with the slow motion, makes the skipping stone appear very large compared to what you might normally expect in a shot like this.  The stone I threw was honestly about 2-2 1/2 inches round.  I like the minimalist quality that this clip has, as well as the disruption that is created in the water from the stone.  Hope you can find a use for it somewhere!

3 Free Stock Footage Clips Are Good for the Gander

I found myself looking for something to shoot the other day before making my way into the office.  I decided to go down to a pond that I know has a variety of waterfowl that consistently visit.  While I am happy with how these turned out, due to the side of the water they decided to gather on, I was fighting the sun for a good portion of it.  There were other clips I had captured, but between the hard glare of the sun, the tiny size of the LCD screen in relation to the glare, and my more than brisk pace to capture something nice within the time frame I had given myself, I was kind of guessing on the focus sometimes. This, in my opinion, didn't make the footage as sharp as it needed to be.  I hope to get a larger/better monitor soon.   These 3 files though, passed my personal QC requirements.

As far as my winged subjects go, they really didn't care that I was there which was nice, but that just meant they would slowly drift away from me.  I feel a little bad, because I had to keep pretending to throw bread/seeds so the birds would come closer to me and stay at least a little bit interested.  Overall it was a peaceful fun morning, I just need to figure out how to drink coffee and shoot at the same time better and I'll be all set.

One wonderful benefit to going out and shooting random videos, is you get to learn quite a bit about your subjects.  Like my friend in the 2nd clip.  What I HAD though was just a goose, might actually be a "swan goose" (I'm in the process of trying to verify this since they are native to China and Russia mostly).  I didn't really know there were that many different types.  I also didn't know that I would be so interested in finding this stuff out.  I'll be a Ornithologist before you know it.

So here you are.  3 free clips that should cut somewhat well together if you need them for a project.  If I could do it differently, I would have varied my subject placement to alternate between left and right justified, but hey,  maybe I'll go get some more to solve that.

4 Free Stock Footage Clips Are Just My Type

I've been really lucky lately to have the opportunities to cross a lot of shots I've been meaning to get off of my list.  These next 4 (and probably more in the future) are the result of an excellent garage sale find.  With the lenses I have available to me, I was able to get some pretty nice somewhat closeup shots of this typewriter's typebars.  I had to get these with my Canon 24-105mm (non-macro).  The 24mm Sigma I have, that would allow macro focusing, was too wide when brought in close to the machine.  I'd definitely like to revisit this when I can get my hands on a longer macro lens.  The ribbon on the machine was also misaligned, so I wasn't able to get any visible type on paper.  I'm looking forward to tinkering with it to see if it is an easy fix. I had hoped to get some shots of the machine typing "The End" and "Once Upon a Time".  I'd also like to take the carriage off and get a POV shot from the paper's perspective, but I think I'll need a longer macro lens for that as well.  So as it stands ... 4 for you now ... more for you later.  I shot this both in regular and slow motion.  I love the energy the regular motion typing has, but the POWER behind the slow motion shots really blew me away.  It's like every keystroke was a KO punch.  I do acknowledge that I blew it with the audio for the real time shot.  The camera mic wasn't even close to being hooked up or near me when I started doing this.  I've been so used to no audio anyway when doing all of the slow mo work that I just completely overlooked it.

Once again I've included some different angles/options to hopefully help in editing.

5 Stock Footage Clips Spill the Beans

A few days ago, I posted a question on our Facebook and Twitter pages asking people to complete this phrase:

Only one person at the time of this posting had replied and he said "Coffee Beans".  In all honesty, I've had that one on my "to-do" list for quite some time and this was the kick in the butt I needed to get up and just do it.  I shot it a couple of times trying different pour speeds and thought I'd include the variety for you.  My personal favorite is the one that is left justified.  For those of you who read these posts often, you'll know I am a big fan of including negative space.

PS - For those of you interested, the beans are being poured into a giant wooden bowl which helped keep the action in one place.  It was shot with my trusty F&V R-300 ring light as the primary/only source and I used my Sigma 24mm Macro lens at a f1.3 (thanks to my Metabones Speedbooster lens adapter) to get the very shallow depth of field.

PPS - Also, for those coffee aficionados, the beans I used was an organic, fair trade, Honduran coffee from Trader Joe's.   Please don't judge me on that one way or another..   :)

1 Stock Footage Clip is Hoppy

Being a beer lover, it was inevitable that I would release at least one shot of the delicious brew.  It also gave me good practice at "product shots" (an area I've been interested in moving in to for a while).  I've also been wanting to expand my stock footage categories to include food and drink, so I need enough clips warrant it's own section.

If I learned anything from this shoot, it would be that cloth gloves are a MUST when working with both HD and glass items.  I could not get this pint glass clean enough!  This released footage is the best shot I got, and this is after processing the clip, as individual image files, through a batch action script created in Photoshop to utilize it's "content-aware fill' feature on EVERY SINGLE PIECE OF DUST.  The result isn't half bad.  The pour could have been better, and from what I hear, the trick is to slightly "de-carbonate" the drink with a tiny bit of sugar before filling the glass, to reduce the amount of head the pour produces.  Leave a comment below if you've had better luck using a different method.

I used my trusty F&V R-300 LED Ring Light again to light this clip.  It was pretty handy.  I put the light, face-up on the counter and placed the pint glass in the open center. I was pleased with the amount of light it produced without flicker, considering a frame rate of 240 fps and a shutter speed of 1/500.

(PS. For those Beer Enthusiasts out there who MUST know, this is a Shoals Pale Ale from Smuttynose Brewing Company; My absolute favorite is the Old Brown Dog, but I was afraid of the darker color my first time out)

2 Stock Footage Clips Melt With You

In keeping with my winter clip push, I give you 2 somewhat similar shots of icicles melting.  One was is a real time shot with rapidly dripping water and another is in slow motion. I actually had to ramp the slow motion clip between drips because there was literally nothing to see.  It made for a pretty boring minute and 20 second viewing.  So instead, you get 40 seconds cut out and water droplets that are still in slow motion.

I feel these clips will come in handy right before spring in any project where you need to illustrate a seasonal change.  Hope you can use them!

2 Stock Footage Clips are Stoked

I thought I should take a break from all of the "wintery" clips and post something a little more warm.  I had access to this fireplace and thought this might be nice.  Honestly, I do like the more peaceful movement that the slow motion creates, but that gentle flame also give it a somewhat un-organic look.  Something about it is both mesmerizing and unsettling.  Hope either of these are useful in your projects!

1 Stock Footage Clips Driving is Flaky

Risked taking the camera outside today in the snow to quickly capture this shot during my lunch break.  I've been wanting to compile a good selection of "traffic condition" clips for people needing them for news reports.  I love the close focus on the snowflakes.  This also allows a little bit of anonymity in the background. Hope you have a use for it!

2 Clips are Making the Fire Work

So it is with great happiness that I am able to share with you these 2 clips, yet I am also greatly disappointed in myself for the state that their audio is in.  I was in a great position to visually record these fireworks, but I was also 2 feet away from an air conditioner that was working hard to keep a 5 story building cool.  The result was a VERY annoying fan hum throughout the entire show.  The slow motion clips themselves did not record audio because that is not something the FS700 does.

I tried to add some audio effects to the footage, but everything I tried seemed to only fit my own personal taste.  I DID manage to find a really cool site in the process of trying to find sound for these.  It is a site that also offers free media and as far as I'm concerned a place you should visit just as much as you do my blog.  It is from the FinalCutKing himself Zach King and it is called http://sweetsoundeffects.com.  The link will take you directly to his Fireworks Sound Effects package.  I have no doubt that with a little TLC, you can personalize the sound for this footage to your liking.   Please visit, give him some love, follow him on Facebook and subscribe to him on YouTube.

4 Clips are as Busy as Bees

I would not suggest filming busy bees with a shallow depth of field for those of you who are not patient.  Because I was trying to capture them at 240fps I needed as much light as possible which meant I needed to keep the iris open, which also meant that I would be operating with a narrow focus distance.

These little guys were hard at work pollinating my raspberry bushes, which meant that they were happily distracted and not too interested in me.  Let me follow them around for a good amount of time, which is nice because I had to do an insane amount of takes just to have these 4 useable shots.

My motivation for capturing them was the recent news stories about the dwindling numbers of bees.  Hopefully people doing news stories about them will find them useful.

1 Clip is Raining Supreme

One of the amazing things about slow motion footage is how beautifully chaotic some of the simplest things are. I caught this during a rainstorm the other day and love the razor thin depth of field which allowed me to focus on a part of one leaf.  It was raining pretty hard, but you are able to only see the select few drops that hit this particular leaf.  You are seeing the rain fall at 240p played back at 30 frames per second.

1 Clip Leaves Much to the Imagination

So over the next couple of weeks (and who knows maybe longer), you will be fortunate enough to reap the benefits of my acquisition of a Sony NEX-fs700 camera to play around with.  I feel we've time lapsed ourselves out a little huh?  Get ready for some silky smooth slow motion.

I really like this clip.  There is something very strong and chaotic about it, even though it is slow and fluid.  I was impressed at how much detail came through in the leaves even with the strong backlight of the sun.  There are a lot of people out there who use my footage to accent their writing, music and poetry.  I feel this might be appreciated and helpful in this community.
