1 Completely Free Stock Footage Clip to Make up for Me Being Flaky

Happy New Year everyone!  It has been a while since I last posted. The holidays were busy, and the new year started up the same, but I am happy to have found time to upload another clip. During the past 2 months, I've tried to capture a bunch of things, and most of them didn't work out to my liking.  That is part of the reason why you haven't seen too much. I've decided to go simple and grabbed something that compliments one of my most popular offerings. This time though, the snow is falling in real time and the camera has been pointed up so the flakes come down toward the lens.  This shot is 100% practical, so there is no pre-comped matte or alpha channel. You shouldn't have many issues overlaying onto another clip though using some layer blending options in your editor. Hope you like it and I hope it helps!

You are welcome to use this video in your projects you are working on, or keep it in your clip library for future work. The only thing you cannot do is turn around and offer it AS stock footage. Have fun with it!

1 Completely Free Stock Footage Clip Is up in Flames

I'm happy to offer this clip for you to use, but can't take 100% of the credit for it's creation.  What I mean by that, is this was created by using a free effects preset for After Effects by the amazing people over at RocketStock. They have a pretty awesome "freebie" (I like to consider it outreach) area where they offer this preset. While I did create the "solid" the effect was applied to, and  I manipulated and altered the flames to my liking, their free preset did a lot of the heavy lifting. So if you get a chance after downloading this, go check out RocketStock and see what they are all about, they deserve the traffic.

1 Completely Free Stock Footage Clip Is All Flash and No Bang

Included among my party popper purchase was also some sparklers.  I wanted to sparks and clip to be sort of an obscure background with the embers being somewhat out of focus with some beautiful bokeh.  I passed a couple in front of the camera and thought that they worked out pretty well.  Hopefully the clip will be useful to illustrate a celebration or festival, or to be used as an overlay or special effect.

1 Free Stock Footage Clip Is Having a Flare Up

One thing that has been lacking in my library of completely free videos, is effect clips.  Most notably, fire and explosions.  This one here was my first try at getting something, and honestly, while I'm not entirely happy with the results, I am enough so to release it.

Like any first time, I've walked away with a laundry list of things I am going to do differently.  I don't know enough about pyrotechnics to really push myself, so I've initially erred on the side of caution.

First, the accelerant I used was in aerosol form, and was too powerful and fast to be recorded cleanly at the high speeds I could achieve.  This footage was taken from a 480fps capture and even so, there is quite a bit of motion blur from the speed in which this flame moved.  I also found out that the true color temperature of fire was much higher than what my camera was capable of (hence the slightly, overly orange flame).  It was shot at 2300k, (my camera's limit) but realistically (from what research I have been able to do) should have been closer to 1800k.  Lighting wasn't an issue at least.  This was recoded at an f6.3 with a shutter speed of 1/1000th (closest I could get to a 180 degree shutter with the 480fps).

All that stuff aside, I really hope this is useful to some of you.  I like the motion of the flame and most of it stays within frame, so you have an option of rotating and scaling the clip to fit your FX needs.  Hope this helps!!!

A high definition ball of fire erupts from the left side of the image and plooms as it moves right.

3 Stock Footage Clips Take a Leak

One of the more popular tools in an editor's toolkit nowadays is the "Light Leak".  The idea is to simulate the old style "imperfect" capture of footage on film when light would sneak in between the lens camera or through the film door (if it has been worn down).  It is now a popular effect and is used as a storytelling device/visual cue to simulate flashbacks, or even act as a transition.  Usually these files are imported into your NLE and put over another clip and blended using an "overlay" effect.  Previously, I released a clip that was kind of like a light leak, but thought I should have some practical ones for people to use as well.

I created these by leaving the lens off of my T2i and tested out different lighting setups hitting the bare sensor (risky I know!!!).

There are three different types below.  The "Hard Edge" clip helps simulate a shifted or poorly threaded film frame during playback.  The "Fast Motion" clip would be helpful as a accompaniment to a whip pan or really any other type of transition.  The "Soft Focus" clip is what you would typically consider your most common leak, gently filling parts of the frame with light.  Hopefully you will be able to find good uses or at least one of these.

1 Stock Footage Clip Lets it Snow

I've been waiting a while for a day when the snow was falling just right.  We've gotten a lot of heavy sleety and misty powdery conditions, but nothing this "flaky".  Unlike a lot of stock snow clips you may find out there, this is 100% real, live-action weather.  Snow falling has been the most requested shot lately, so I am happy to deliver something somewhat usable.  This may be the best I can get.

I shot it with a slightly small depth of field and at 240 fps on the FS700.  The video nerd in me loves seeing the flakes that float through mostly in focus. You should also be able to do a nice overlay/screen effect using this on your existing footage to give it a nice "wintery" treatment.  As the clip is now, it's falling peacefully and almost picturesque.  Feel free to speed it up 10x if you are going for a more snowstorm type atmosphere.

1 Clip is Kind and Rewinds

I managed to grab this clip while I was doing the 8mm film digitizing mentioned in my previous post.  Once again, while the actual content of the film footage was private, I thought that some rewind media might come in handy to people making montages or for any video that is in need of some sort of artistic momentum, distraction or interruption. I'd  be very interested to see what you all use this for.  Feel free to share your work below in the comment section, on our Facebook page, through Twitter or any other way you display your projects.

1 Clip Follows the Leader

I've been working on some digitizing projects lately and trying my hand at converting old 8mm film reels.  While most of the content is personal, I have managed to put together a couple of selections of "film noise" you can overlay in to your own projects.  If you watch the preview clip, you will notice that there are a few different types of film stocks at different ages, so the color temperature and style of film will vary slightly.  Hopefully it can help some of you out with your aesthetic needs.

1 HD Clip Leaks a Little

I have been experimenting with a couple of general effects and thought it might be kind of cool to create my own "Light Leak".  These videos are used traditionally as an overlay and helps transition between clips.  They give a very nostalgic effect to your footage, and really helps those people going for that "instagram" like look in their video.

I went about creating it a little differently and stacked 2 lenses to give myself a slight pinhole of exposure.  People can now scale the leak to any size as well as position it any way they'd like to get the desired effect.

I'll post some examples of people using the light leak effect correctly to our Facebook page.

1 Clip is Burning For You

Ventured into the world of effects the other day and came up with this pretty cool film burn.  Normally you would overlay this on whatever video you are working on to give it that old, torn look.  Past the break I also have a preview video I created using this burn effect and one of my stock video clips with a little motion blur applied to it.
