2 Free Stock Footage Clips Have Met Their Match

This shot is one I've been wanting to do ever since I got the FS-700.  It is also one that was suggested to me by a "follower" on Facebook.

One of the things I love about working through these random shots is realizing where my current limitations are and developing strategies, plans and work-arounds to improve.  While I like both of these clips, I was pushing the boundaries of my Sigma 24mm Macro lens.  The matchbox was as close as I could get and still stay in it's minimum depth of field.  At this distance and focal length, the match head was not filling the frame as much as I had originally envisioned.  To me, this experience then means researching and eventually purchasing a longer macro lens for extreme close-ups (Please feel free to leave suggestions of what type YOU like in the comment section below).

The one benefit to restricting myself to this distance, was the amount of surface area I had on the match box to strike it and still keep the action in frame ... holy cow!  It was REALLY hard to strike that match, even within these wider than desired confines.  If you look closely, you'll be able to see the wood bending due to the force that I needed to apply to get the match to ignite.

5 Stock Footage Clips Spill the Beans

A few days ago, I posted a question on our Facebook and Twitter pages asking people to complete this phrase:

Only one person at the time of this posting had replied and he said "Coffee Beans".  In all honesty, I've had that one on my "to-do" list for quite some time and this was the kick in the butt I needed to get up and just do it.  I shot it a couple of times trying different pour speeds and thought I'd include the variety for you.  My personal favorite is the one that is left justified.  For those of you who read these posts often, you'll know I am a big fan of including negative space.

PS - For those of you interested, the beans are being poured into a giant wooden bowl which helped keep the action in one place.  It was shot with my trusty F&V R-300 ring light as the primary/only source and I used my Sigma 24mm Macro lens at a f1.3 (thanks to my Metabones Speedbooster lens adapter) to get the very shallow depth of field.

PPS - Also, for those coffee aficionados, the beans I used was an organic, fair trade, Honduran coffee from Trader Joe's.   Please don't judge me on that one way or another..   :)

1 Stock Footage Clip is Bananas, B-A-N-A-N-A-S

I was finally able to pull out my A/C adapter for my T2i and put together a setup to capture a very long-form time lapse.  After blacking out a room in my basement, I set up a very simple shot and employed a F&V R-300 LED ring light around my DSLR.  The light and the camera were plugged in and the Canon was programmed to utilize the intervalometer in the Magic Lantern firmware.  I was VERY happy with the consistent output of the light.  No flicker whatsoever.  This video was shot over 8 days.  Each frame is 15 minutes apart.  The hardest part was not having my camera at my side during my day to day routine.

3 Stock Footage Clips for a Fan

I tend to browse Twitter daily, reading news from the stock footage world.  The other day, I came across a Twitter user who was coming up with nothing when looking for free stock footage of an electric fan.  Since I am always looking for my next clip idea, I replied to his tweet to see if there was anything specific he was looking for.  Fortunately the type of fan he was looking for was similar to an old one I had in my basement at home.  That night I captured some shots to offer online.

These clips were shot at 240 frames per second.  I wanted to reduce the motion blur on the spinning blades, knowing the footage can be easily sped up. The opposite, not so much.  Once again I've included some different shots to hopefully help in editing.

2 Stock Footage Clips Chip in the Dough

I've always wanted to put up some cooking clips, and a roll of cookie dough caught my eye while I was shopping the other day.  What started as capturing some footage on a whim, turned into a pretty neat comparison between my 2 cameras.

The clip titled "Baking Cookies" was shot at 1fps at 1920x1080 with a shutter speed of 1/2 on my Sony NEX FS-700.  The beautiful part of this process was a clip that was ready to upload the minute I was finished.  The clip titled "Baking Cookies Alt Angle" was shot using my Canon T2i with the Magic Lantern Firmware hack using the intervalometer feature at 1 image per second RAW (5184x3456).  The clip was processed through After Effects and the resulting 1920x1080 clip was created "full sized" (cropped instead of resized) so what you see an 1:1 pixel display.

I'd say the little Canon keeps up pretty well doesn't it?

Another beneficial side effect of this footage, was that the resulting cookies were a good way to thank my wife for taking over the kitchen for the night.

1 Clip Struggles to Stay Within the Lines

I was playing with my daughter today and thought it may be a good time to turn the camera on and offer up my first "person/actor" related stock video.  I'm not sure if I will ever offer up a video of her where she is in focus, but who knows.  This clip might be a great background for anyone doing a piece that involved children, art or family.

1 Clip is Blinding

Shot this clip in my home a little while ago.  I've been wanting to get some clips up that have some sort of motion or action in them for people to use.  Right now, this is what I can give.  You will see me walk into the background and pull up the shades and open the window.  EXCITING RIGHT? Hey, you may need it someday.

A New File Hosting Option Has Come Our Way

Working and talking with Mark over at Viddb.com, he as steered me in the direction of Archive.org as a file hosting option.  I will be slowly uploading and using it for the stock files I create. At the moment my first batch was with my first post here.  The Archive.org files are simply "Right Click Save"

Mark has been very helpful, and it is thanks to people like him that this site has been doing very well.  I hope to showcase more people like in a new section I will be creating showcasing other people in the Free Stock Video world.  Hopefully together we can create a nice network.  When you get time, please go visit Mark over at Viddb.com and check out the clips he has available.  He has been VERY busy populating his site, you will even see clips from Beachfront there!

You can help too!  Please bookmark, facebook, tweet and share Viddb.com as well at this site.

1 Clip is for the Birds

This video file I am offering to you is actually a collection of 8 clips. This bird you see was having a fun time coming to the feeder and then jumping away (back to his/her nest maybe?). ANYWAYS, It was taken in the early AM as you can see a rather pastel color palette in the background. The depth of field is fairly short, but the little bugger is in it more often than not.

1 Clip Perks You Up

I shot this quickly when I saw how hot my coffee was in my cold, cold house.  The sun was just coming up and it looked great.  I'd love to see someone use this.  Shoot me a message or comment if you end up putting this into one of your works.

Progression

I have been working on an updated way of organizing the many different clips offered here on this blog.  If you check out the Timelapse tab (or click here) you will see a new look I am going for in the individual pages.  It is slow but necessary work.

It also lets me keep track of the files a lot easier, each download link on those pages brings you back to the original posting.  This way I only have to keep one link updated to make sure the files are available when you need them.

I wanted to include file hosting through Vimeo, but every HD file I uploaded to them was down-converted to 1280x720.  Wupload has also changed their hosting a little bit, and I am no longer able to keep track of the clips.  I will look for another file hosting site, but right now, Uploadstation is the reliable option.

Stay tuned for many more clips soon!

A few new things

As I get this site into shape, please expect new things.  You will now see tabs towards the top of the blog directing you to a grouping page of Stock Footage and Looping Background.  This way you can see either group just a page away.  Also up in the tabs section is the "How to Download" pages for newcomers to see how to get their clips.

I'm also getting ready to post another group of videos, so stay tuned.

Random Footage: Clip 1

Shot this the other day, and don't really have a release theme for it. I have decided to pepper into my other posts, some random individual clips.  Who knows, maybe we have a recurring segment started.

Enjoy!
